Cary Neff.
Good tools, real knowledge, and the kind of hospitality you don't expect — brought to every kitchen, professional or home.
One chef. A lifetime in professional kitchens. And one belief — that the right tool, cared for and in the right hands, makes everything better.
Cary Neff is a Philadelphia chef, restaurateur, and private chef whose roots run deep in the city's food scene. Over a career spanning three decades, he's been a restaurant owner, a private chef "to the stars," a cooking instructor, and a partner to many of the city's culinary giants — earning a reputation as something of a Philadelphia institution.
Neff opened his first restaurant, a French bistro named Cary, near Rittenhouse Square in 1995. He went on to take the helm of the venerable Sansom Street Oyster House, running the beloved seafood landmark for several years, then opened Coquette at 5th and Bainbridge, which ran until 2011. After that, he shifted toward a more personal craft — working directly with high-end clients as a private chef and running Cary Neff Catering & Events, handling special-event, film-production, and private-jet catering.
In 2021, Neff turned his lifelong passion for culinary tools and craftsmanship into C.M. Neff Cook Supply Co. — a curated mix of new and vintage kitchen supplies, knife sharpening, and honest advice off the corner of 13th and McKean in South Philadelphia's East Passyunk Crossing, for professional chefs and home cooks alike. It didn't stay a single shop for long. His sharpening earned him Philadelphia Magazine's Best of Philly 2023 Knife Sharpener, and the work grew into a family of trades built around the kitchen — C.M. Neff Cook Supply Co., The Knife Shop, The Pantry, and Cary Neff Catering & Events — each held to the same standard, all under his umbrella company, Cary Neff & Co.
For Neff, it's about far more than merchandise. It's about sharing his love of the culinary arts, listening to what cooks need, and reminding people of the simple joy good food brings — from the heart of the shop to the heart of your kitchen.
cary's philosophyEverything here is a nod to hospitality. Cary built his career on the small, unexpected touches — the extra bit of service, the dish you didn't order but won't forget — and that instinct runs through all of it. In catering especially, he likes to surprise a client with something they didn't ask for, just to make the experience better than they pictured.
